Undoubtedly, recent innovations in crime scene investigation create the prerequisites for the further development. Such instruments, as alternate light sources, lasers, electrostatic lifting, and GPS are the tools of the future of crime scene investigation field. Among others, a technology of automation of forensic instrumentation will definitely change the future of this very field because of its ability to gather and share the existed information more quickly and efficiently.
To start with, automation of forensic instrumentation seems to potentially greatly transform the process of crime investigation since it greatly eases its conduction. As Buckles (2007) explains, it is a “connectivity technology allowing faster and more open sharing, retrieval, and analysis of information, directly from the crime scene” (p. 278). Hence, it is feasible to differentiate on of the most crucial advantages of this method – it is directly connected with the actual crime scene. For instance, FBI’s automated fingerprint identification system is a vivid example of how effectively this method works now. Speaking about the future perspectives, this technology is believed to only strengthen the capabilities of the crime scene investigation through the way of allowing “crime scene technicians to digitally photograph … evidence found at the crime scene” (Buckles, 2007, p. 278). The active implementation of the automation of forensic instrumentation promises to present a huge number of electronic databases in the nearest future that will simplify the process of crime investigation. Returning to the point of current tendencies, Llewellyn (2015) indicates that forensic laboratories choose a technology of automation in DNA analysis (p. 10). Accordingly, it is possible to state that automation of forensic instrumentation is an inevitable step into the future.
Summing it all up, the presented evidence prove the fact that such technology as automation of forensic instrumentation is one of the most crucial points that will lead to the further evolution of the crime investigation system.
