Culturally Subversive Cities
Even though the whole world is advancing towards increased welfare to all members of the society, there still exists instances of acute oppression of certain minority groups, even within the most advanced cities in the world. Los Angeles, a city that has experienced modern development to the heights of urbanization, is characterized by numerous instances that have portrayed undesirable cultural practices that have resulted in exploitation of certain groups of people, while the others advance and enjoy the economic surge. Harvey has referred to this mode of development as a “Post-Fordist” practice that sees the accumulation of wealth at the expense of certain groups of people (23). Exploring the dynamism of cultural practices in Los Angeles, the concept of global capitalism has been underlined as the key factors that have resulted to the rebellious nature of culture across the societal groups that live in the city and its suburbs.
CITIES AS GOOD NOURISHING ENVIRONMENTS FOR SUBVERSIVE CULTURAL GROUPS
The primary factor that causes change in the behaviors of people in the towns is the actions of the society towards the particular group of individuals. The increase in poverty while the wealthy continue to amass riches has led to increased social ties across the people subjected to strife together. The poor immigrants from other areas that came into Los Angeles were met with hostility and exploitation, instead of experiencing a flourishing life, as they had hoped for (Nicholls 301).
Exposure to increased destitution has made the people vulnerable to exploitation by social mechanisms, such as exploitation by the police units and widespread social violence (Nicholls 301, Rendón 62-63). Therefore, people living in poverty have become accustomed to violence, leaving them insecure and have to develop inhuman practices so as to avert the danger associated with exposure to violence. The standard resolution includes the formation of subgroups that engender towards self-protection and those who they love.
As the unfortunate strive to survive in the harsh neighborhoods, the young in these groups develop disinterest in common practices such as schooling (Rendón 65). Even though such social amenities are scarce in the neighborhoods, with a scanty supply of needed learning materials, interest shifts to other activities such as finding food and other survival needs. Drugs have become prevalent social crisis among the created group of people. The gangster groups which now engage in illegal practices develop a kind of loyalty among the members as they try to survive evading the police and other people who may object to their new culture.
MECHANISMS INVOLVED IN CREATING A SUBGROUP
The primary cause of developing these tools is the rising economic and social disintegration, which subjects the segregated groups to acute poverty and exploitation by social systems. The concentric zonation of the created groups makes them develop a new identity as they are subjected to equal treatment based on the newly created social boundary between them (Reese, Ellen, Geoffrey & Leanne 316).
As the zoning practice continues, the poor have been handled together in poorly developed neighborhoods. These policies, made …
