Hazardous Waste Disposal

Every human and every manufacturer produce hazardous waste, each in their own way. With rapidly increased industry progress, which was in the twentieth century, humanity has got one of the most important problems - environmental pollution. There are several types of hazardous waste defined by the US Environmental Agency (EPA). According to Craig (2015) they are "materials that have come into contact with certain chemical agents, certain pesticides and pharmaceutical products, and the byproducts of common industrial products, such as cleaning solvents, wastewater and sludge." Resolving this problem is crucial, because human activity constantly generates more and more garbage, plants cause air and water pollution etc. It harms both nature and people. Johnrefuse.com (2012) states that ignoring the problem of disposal "can contribute to increased incidents of serious medical conditions among the human residents of the local region." It may cause such problems as cancer, nerve damage and even birth defects.

Fortunately, today society and business understand the importance of hazardous waste disposal. State, as well as local governments, regulates it. Implementing industrial waste management to enterprises is mandatory. It plays a significant role in production, however, its principles are also applicable for individuals. In 1976 EPA established The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act which formed a basis for management for hazardous waste. Industrial waste management includes several major strategies, which can be used for removal or disposal. These strategies were developed in such a way that manufacturer could have minimal costs, and effectively dispose hazardous waste. Main strategies are incineration, recycling, composting and sanitary landfill.

Recycling is probably the most wide-known strategy. Everyone did recycling of trash at least once. There are many recycling bins, centers and companies offering to help with this issue. The most often recyclable materials are paper, glass, plastic and aluminum. People can easily dispose their bottles and used paper with this strategy. Recycling is considered the most environmentally friendly strategy as stated by Antonangeli (2015) "because it does not add any waste material." The great advantage of this method is that recycled items can be used as material for new products. On the other hand, this disposal method is quite expensive and not all the materials can be recycled.

Incineration strategy is burning waste materials. Advantage of this method is generating energy, which can be used for production. But it also has it downside - incineration causes pollution of atmosphere. This problem is being resolved by using filtration system. This strategy is mostly used for toxic chemical's disposal. Incineration is cheaper than recycling, but is more expensive than sanitary landfill.

Not all the materials can be recycled or burnt. Items which cannot be disposed by any other method usually go to landfill. This strategy should also be accomplished with minimal damage for nature and people living near landfill. Nowadays technology of making a landfill requires placing protective lining. Garbage is covered with lining and ground. It helps to avoid leaking of toxic chemicals to ground and water. Landfills remain popular strategy …
