Importance of Nursing Theory
Introduction
The main purpose of theory is to transform the scientific findings into meaningful and generalizable information. Nursing theory provides opportunities to obtain efficient mechanizes for drawing together facts and summarizing them from separate and isolated investigations (Smith & Parker, 2015). The paper will analyze the Roy Adaptation Model that was introduced and developed by Sister Callista Roy in 1976. The theory will be observed in terms of its main concepts, meaning, values and the effect on patient well-being.
The Roy Adaptation Model
Sister Callista Roy developed and integrated the Adaptation Model of Nursing, as a prominent nursing theory. The model represents a person as a set of interrelated biological, psychological and social systems. Thus, a person is striving to maintain the corresponding level of balance between the above-mentioned systems and the outside world. However, in accordance with the model of nursing, there is no absolute level of balance, because almost everyone is striving to live with a unique band, where a patient can cope adequately. In accordance with Roy’s model, it is necessary to employ a six-step nursing process.
First of all, it is vital to identify and assess the patient’s behavior, by comparing it with all required norms (McEwen, & Wills, 2014). Secondly, focal, contextual or residual stimuli have to be assessed and classified. The nursing diagnosis is the next important step in the nursing process, demonstrating the statement of the ineffective behaviors in accordance with the identification of the probable issues. Furthermore, the model involves goal setting, intervention and evaluation processes. Thus, the goals have to be realistic and attainable in order a person will have opportunities to cope with them.
The theory can be applied to a wide variety of patients as well as to the patients after stroke. Rehabilitation nurses work with the patients who are trying to recover from serious chronic diseases, injuries or different types of disabilities. Stroke rehabilitation practice focuses on the corresponding assistance to help a patient to regain independence and improve the quality of life.
