The data presented by experts at Pew Research Center (2015) confirms the view that a few women reach the top. They make only 5 per cent of CEOs in the nation’s Fortune 500 companies (Pew Research Center, 2015). Such statistics does not mean that women are less promising leaders when compared to men. It is suggested that on their way to the top, women face with a greater number of obstacles when compared to men.Alena Hall (2014), a correspondent for the Huffington Post, suggests that there are three major reasons why so few women get top management positions.
Firstly, women may consider that values and ideas encouraged within their companies for promotion are not inspirational. While commenting on this reason, Julie Hoffmann, the co-author of Everyday Moments of Truth, notes that “They didn’t feel like they could be that person, that the profile of the successful person was perhaps too limited” (as cited in Hall, 2014). Another reason is that women lack a supportive relationship with their supervisor. Unlike men, they need greater supervisor support to be motivated for career growth. Thirdly, women rarely achieve top positions because they do not see relatable model within their own company. Hall’s (2014) suggestions are further confirmed by the findings of Pew Research Center (2015). In addition to the already mentioned reasons, experts from the Center note that women are held to higher standards than men and an ossified belief that women are not tough enough for business, which discourages many companies from hiring them for top executive positions.
Another important reason is that women have more family responsibilities than men, and it does not leave them time for running a major corporation (Pew Research Center, 2015).The story of Oprah Winfrey, Carly Fiorina, or Margaret C. Whitman suggests that women can benefit business through being effective leaders. It is though important to identify obstacles that hinder their promotion to the top positions.
I suggest that servant, authentic, and ethical leadership models are effective in the global context. In order to prove the validity of this assertion, I will define each leadership model and give examples of when they were used to benefit different cultures and countries.The idea of servant leadership is best explained by Robert K. Greenleaf, the author of the concept: “The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead” (as cited in Spears, 2005, p. 1).
A servant-leader has ten distinct characteristics that include inter alia awareness, foresight, and commitment to the growth of people.
