3.1 BUSINESS ACTIVITIES AND BRAND HISTORY

Fashion designer Christian Louboutin (Appendix A) has international recognition for his distinctive red-soled footwear. Born in France in 1963, Louboutin first started dreaming about the perfect pair of shoes when he was a teenager. Louboutin discovered about his life passion by accident while in a trip to the museum. He saw a sign, which indicated that shoes were not permitted there. "I was totally fascinated by that sign. I'd never seen shoes like that". (Louboutin, to W). Expelled from school at age 16 he started working and in the 1980’s he found himself working for famous shoe designer Charles Jourdan.

After working as a freelancer for a while, in the early 1990’s, Louboutin launched his first women footwear line and he added his legendary red soles in 1993. "My assistant was sitting there, painting her nails red. I took one look and decided to color my soles red as a statement for the season." (Louboutin, to footwear news). Over the years, Louboutin has continued to turn out season after season of imaginative footwear. In addition to women’s shoes, he has worked to expand his reach in fashion. Louboutin launched a line of handbags in 2003, men’s shoes as well and his recently launched beauty line in 2013. This so called brand extension turned out to be extremely successful.
