The Experiences of the Nurse Educator with Unethical Behaviors among Associate Degree Nursing Student and the Effect of the Unethical Behaviors on Teacher/Student Relationship
Unethical behavior is a common experience in various life aspects. As healthcare is no exception, the issues of bullying, bribery, domineering, Machiavellianism, self-centered and narcissistic behaviors arise during the
process of both preparation and working. The qualitative research enables comparing incivility acts on two levels, including student-educator, and student-student relationship on the associate degree in order to trace the
mechanism of mutual and consequent impact. The research aims at studying and defining the unethical behaviors of associate degree medical students and the aftermath of the adverse role-modelling occurring from incivility acts. The chain-referral sampling method will be used to obtain the questionnaire survey data owing to the difficulty and controversy of the content.
The necessity of the topic research comes from the literature insufficiency covering it. While the generalized findings on medical unethical behavior are widespread their impact and content remain theoretical. The investigation into impact and content of the incivility acts enable observing both “quality deterioration” and “trust lacking” to medical workers (Oore et al., 2010, p. 878). The abilities of chain-referral provide the necessary privacy to the interviewees and imply a broader scope of research without the awareness on the use of its results. Incivility forms a hierarchy in healthcare, where democracy is required (King & Piotrowski, 2015, p. 257). The controlling and abusive behavior of educators impacts students who assimilate new relationship forms through role-modelling and copying (Benbassat, 2014, p. 550). Collective data sampling proves the opposite correlation between the authoritative educator’s behavior and academic performance that proves the
legitimacy of the statement (P=003) (Hilbert, 1988, p. 164). Stressful and unfriendly environment molds the behavior patterns that respectively leads to burnout and turnover due to subjective reasons (Oyeleye, Hanson,
O’Connor, & Dunn, 2013, p. 537). Consequently, the early prevention of educational incivility eradicates the adverse effects of unethical practices on healthcare quality service.
The selected research strategy implies vast potential of observing techniques. Thus, polling and chain contacts imply flexibility of survey and criteria adding. E.g. the semi-structured interviews provide marking similarities and differences in educator and student responses (Anthony & Yastik, 2011, p. 140). As a result, emotional intelligence in healthcare educators can be linked to student’s acquired attitudes (Fernandez, Peterson, Holmstrőm & Connolly, 2012, p. 241). The potential disadvantage lies in oversampling possibility and certain information credibility issues owing to the content subtlety.
The incivility prevention in educators can be opposed through psychological empowerment and interventions of the students and co-workers. The specific aspects of ethical behavior instructing should be implemented
