Organizational Behavior Questions Assignment
Question 3
Telecommuting is closely linked to organizational behavior and have a direct influence on it. The organizations that implement telecommuting have to be prepared for changes in organizational behavior in order to ensure the effectiveness of remote work of its employees (Robbins 65). I consider telecommuting to be more good than not-so-good because it provides employees with the ability to manage their time and avoid stressful situations in the workplace. More and more innovative and successful companies such as Google are considering telecommuting to be an effective method that creates a friendly relationship within a company and increase the level of employees loyalty. In its turn, inspired and loyal employees are able to provide business with better work outcomes that lead to growth and development of a company or organization. The long-term success of any company or organization depends on the performance and dedication of employees. That is why managers heavily concentrate on building a high level of employee loyalty and the implementation of telecommuting is one of the methods to achieve this.
In order to have a better understanding of why telecommuting is more good than not-so-good, it is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages. As any business issue, telecommuting has both good and bad sides. Moreover, for every particular business these sides can be different because of different approaches to management and leadership. However, there are the overall things that make telecommuting good and not-so-good.
First of all telecommuting can be a very beneficial way of doing business for small companies and organizations that have limited financial resources (Robbins 76). That is because telecommuting helps to cut electricity costs because office equipment energy consumption is one of the main sources of the increase in operational costs. Probably, a considerable saving potential of telework makes it one of the most suitable approaches for small businesses. However, telecommuting also provides such employees-related benefits as an efficiency of the work, flexibility, and work fulfillment. Every manager knows that happy employees make a business more successful. Moreover, flexible work schedules and minimal supervisions make employees more interested in achieving better results by developing leadership and management qualities in them. These qualities also help them to communicate more effectively which is one of the most important things for the success of telecommuting.
For example, when employees simply do not have the required skill in order to share information effectively the process of implementation of telecommuting can be very challenging for every company, no matter how small or big it is. That is because the inability to be an effective communicator is the main problem that managers face when implementing telecommuting. That is why telecommuting should be implemented by degrees in order to leave time for employees to understand the basis of effective communication.
