Semiotic Analysis
Introduction
The founders of semiotics were the American philosopher and logician Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) and the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913). It is usually assumed that it was Peirce, who liked to create new terms. Saussure started a new science - "semiology", which became widespread in theoretical linguistics.The main purpose of this paper is to write a semiotic analysis about a game.
This paper includes: Introduction, Main Body, Conclusion parts, References and Appendixes.
The codes, signs and conventions are observed in the main body. Also, the structure of the game is shown within the game. The possibilities of engagement to the conventions in a game are discussed. The main principles, sayings, suggesting, the relationship between them are used and observed. This paper deals with a detailed game presentation including images in order to support ideas and examples. The Analytical summary and the concluding statement are discussed in the conclusion part.Semiotic AnalysisThe task of modern semiotics is to examine the nature of signs that the mind of a person can use to understand things or to transfer their knowledge to others (Chandler, 2002).So, there are three levels of studies within the modern semiotics:
1) most signs and sign structures;
2) code and systems that organize communications;
3) cultural context, where they interact.
This means that semiotics is integrated with conceptual arsenal of structuralism, studying information and communication processes, as linguistic structures and systems of lingo-cultural continuum (Thibault, 2004).The paper focuses on the semiotic analysis of the Monopoly game. First of all, doing analytical, semiotic analysis, it is necessary to take into account the following:
1). Game board. It is one of the main parts of the game, having examined the game board, it is easy to find the general idea of the game. A player might look at the pathway and images.
2). Game pieces, they can be of different color, a person might follow the rules to take them.
3). Rules of the game, a person might want to find out some unique and interesting rules for the game.
4). How players interact with each other and socialization factor – is the game cooperative, competitive, humorous, introspective could be applied to a game. The most interesting moment concerns children; the description of fruitful cooperation within a game is very useful.
5). History, it is quite often important moment; some inquiring people always want to know all the details concerning the game.
6). Socialization is probably the most significant part, it concerns the way of influences of a game for a player. It sometimes deals with such important questions as racial stereotypes, class structures, and future occupations. The Monopoly game is full of real-life examples, concerning business sphere.
