Sex and the City and Consumer Culture

Sex and The City television show can be considered as one of the most successful and popular in the late 1990s- early 2000s. The plot of the show is based on the 1997 book of the same name by Candace Bushnell and follows the lives of four women in their thirties with Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) as the central character and narrator. To an extent, Sex and The City took representation of women’s sexuality in television drama to a new level, portraying successful, independent and strong women. While the major discussion about the show refers to the issue of feminism and gender norms, this research paper focuses on the topic of consumerism that is often overlooked because feminism is a seemingly much more burning social issue. All four major characters manifest the idea of gender equality at different points of the show and then readily neglect it, while the obsession with material goods and shopping as “therapy” remains unchanged. Thus, there is a need for investigating the problem of consumerism and evaluating how Sex and The City contributes to development
of consumerism culture. This essay will process a variety of secondary sources to meet this objective and analyze different views on consumerism as it is depicted in the show.
