Sexology Research
Abstract
This paper deals with the analysis of the research conducted by a prominent American biologist, entomologist, and zoologist Alfred C. Kinsey. Having understood the importance and necessity of conducting a revolutionary study, he succeeded in receiving the grant for one’s experimental project. As a result, the world was given one of the most shocking data ever regarding the sexual activities of the US population. Kinsey compiled two books - Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953), where all the parts of the survey are enlightened. Having used the methodology of interviewing the Americans, he managed to establish a so-called Kinsey scale, the main indicator of which is a sexual orientation. Thus, this research now possesses a status as one of the most progressive scientific investigations in the US history.
Sexology Research
Undoubtedly, such a topic of research provokes a lot of disputes on whether it is a justified approach to scientifically research the human sexuality. Anyway, the research conducted by Alfred Kinsey and his colleagues is the fundamental work related to the issue of sexology. In this way, a thorough analysis of this sexology research forces to understand its progressiveness and outstanding impact on the whole American life.
Major Researchers/Research Institutions
To start with, a brief data about the researchers is to be presented. Although the writing of two core books where all the research process is presented involves three scientists – Kinsey, Pomeroy, and Martin – it is the first one, an American biologist, entomologist, and zoologist who initiated and headed the whole researching process (Carter-Smith, 2016, p.1). Therefore, there is no strange that nowadays the gained achievements of this scientific investigation are traditionally known as the Kinsey reports. Speaking about the research institutions that provided a support in running the research, “the Committee for Research in the Problems in Sex (CRPS), a grant-funding organization endowed through the Rockefeller's National Research Council” awarded funds for this sex survey (Carter-Smith, 2016, p.2). Hence, Kinsley with the assistance of the institution colleagues was ready to start carrying out his social experiments.
Historical Background of the Study
Before starting analyzing the Kinsey reports, it is determinative to realize that the topic of sexuality was strictly a moral concept for quite a long time. In this context, Kinsey’s decision was a brave and daring one. However, at the end of the 19th century, the new realization came stating that sexuality functions directly influences the sexual diseases. This new wave of knowledge created a new area of potential studies and researches. Having received a grant from the CRPS, Kinsey consistently started to think over the process of the global survey. The Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at the University of Indiana also played its supporting role.
