The cinematography presented us a lot of different films. Some of them became masterpieces, and every person knows the сrash of Titanic, or what happen in Gone with the Wind movie. Modern studios are presenting a lot of high-quality movies, with interesting storylines and high-definition picture. There is an overall trend when modern movies are all about money-making, they have a dynamic plot that leads to huge box offices, but modern movies are less artistic. The Bicycle Thieves is a bright example of such old-school movies, where the depicting of reality and film director’s idea was more important than box offices and critic’s review.
Bicycle Thieves is a famous movie of 1950’s, was filmed by Vittorio De Sica upon the story by Cesare Zavattini and Luigi Bartolini, starring Lamberto Maggiorani and Enzo Staiola. The films demonstrate the post-war Italy and the problems of working class. Father and his son faced the crime when their bike was stolen, so they decided to find the attackers. Nowadays, this film is a bright example of director’s depicting of reality, so every scene looks like real life with everyday problems, stories, and ordinary people. It is important to notice that European films are always different from American, due to the fact that in Europe the director’s creativity overcomes the power of film studios, that often changes the plot and criticizes the director’s imagination to make the film more popular among the viewers. The real masterpieces from artistical point of view, are usually hard to watch, the viewers should keep in mind the whole storyline and watch every scene attentively. So, there is a huge controversy, when films are real masterpieces, but the receive bad feedback from critics and low box offices. In 1990’s, the film industry changed their vector from real story films into science-fictional films, with super –heroes or cosmic battles. Such films bring the high box offices but they are worthless as the part of the art.
The Bicycle Thieves is a bright example of such old-school movies, where the depicting of reality and film director’s idea was more important than box offices and critic’s review. It is a common fact that in old-school movies, the film directors tried to show the story as realistic as they can, in modern films, there are more computer graphics and other features that make them less realistic but more popular among the viewers.
