The Dog Training: Journal Entry
Dogs are the most popular pets in the world. Training them ensures that they are well behaved and safe. Efficient training methods are required so that the dog learns how to behave itself properly and heed to the handlers commands. Besides, training a dog is a gift to the owner’s sanity and compliments from people they meet. This essay will discuss debates and people in regard to the topic dog training. One of the methods of training a dog is using positive reinforcements. It produces excellent results in teaching dogs how to tackle, obey and other exercises. It operates by rewarding the dog whenever it portrays the required behavior (Gerritsen & Haak, 2014).
Contrastively, trainers also use punishers in dogs. It involves the removal of a reward in case the dog fails to heed to command or behaves badly. The dog can get slapped if it flushes the owners face towel in the toilet. This one often conflicts with popular usage (O'Heare 2014).
Debates
The book Dominance in Dogs dispels the theory that dogs domestic dogs descended from the wolves. Since the dogs are always in a constant battle to dominate the pack, it explains that dogs too are in the bid to dominate people. It hence uses this idea to show that humans should employ strict rules harshly to train the dogs. However, Barry Eaton claims that dogs are very different from wolves since they were selectively bred many years ago from the wolves. People should hence not treat them like adversaries (Eaton 2011).
People
John Fisher, who has worked as a dog handler, believes that dogs can be trained to any standard using motivational and reward based regime. He thinks this is better than the use of force or punishers. He also believes that for efficient training, dog handlers must change their attitude to a friendlier one (Fisher 2011). In conclusion, dogs should be trained through positive reinforcement as it is the most efficient. They should also be handled in friendly means for excellent learning. Through this, dogs can become man’s best partner.
