The Glass Menagerie

The author uses a “turgid Smokey red glow”, “gloomy gray lighting and he also uses “deep blue dusk” that brings out the overcast images of memory. Delicate Lemony light as Jim enters and soft light from the new lamp brings out Laura’s weak unnatural beauty. As the play ends, the light is set grim which brings out Tom’s sad memories. Music in the play has been used to add emotion of a scene.

For instance, music plays softly in the background symbolizing Amanda’s duty as a mother. Throughout the play, music loudness increases and decreases depending on the emotions of the characters. When Tom confronts his mother about his Sister’s handicap, music changes to a Tango with a tone that is a gloomy tone.To emphasize events the Author has described the appearance of characters and stage direction foreshadow. Tom has been described to look like a Voyager and Laura compared to a piece of translucent glass. They bring out Laura as a fragile and fearful girl who was not able to Part with her past even with her encounter with Jim. Stage directions help us to understand how Tom could not live with guilt even after going away from her mother and sister. This is a sentimental memory play, which is clear. It brings out desires and emotions of the characters. The settings reflect conflicts between Amanda, Laura, Tom and Jim.

Stage directions clearly bring out the real characters and their traits. It shows how Amanda wants Laura married and the way Tom hates his life and has the urge to leave and get a better life. The stage direction does not constrain nor does it limit characters of this play considering it is a memory play.
