The Use of Light in Paintings at Different Time of The Day
The painting under consideration are a nocturne by Vincent Van Gogh Starry Night, an early morning scene by Karen Mathison Schmidt Misty Morning, and a painting depicting daylight by Christopher Clarke Farmhouse in the Country.
Starry Night by Van Gogh portrays a windy summer night. The only bright objects in the painting depicted in warm colors are the stars and the moon. They shed pale dim light on all the other elements of the composition thus tinting them in blue hues. The effect of illumination on the surfaces is achieved by quick white brushstrokes. The contours in the picture are very dark and sharp which is used to delimit the dark objects from one another and create the contrast with the gleaming on the surfaces.
Misty Morning by Karen Mathison Schmidt depicts the early morning summer landscape. For the sun is rising, the sky is painted in saturate pink tints. The reflection on the water resembles the sky with a little colder hues. The figures of the trees as they are shadowed by the rising sun are colored in blue-violet palette with white contours at the top as the sunlight passes through leaves. The foreground of the painting is rather dark as the sunrays do not yet illuminate it so that it stays in shadow.
Farmhouse in the Country by Christopher Clarke portrays a rustic daylight scenery. The warm colors in the painting are used to evoke the feeling of pleasant sunny weather. The sky is very bright with pink and beige hues The whole picture is flooded with sunlight which is produced by highlighting the contours with thin yellow brushstrokes. The shadows in the picture are not very long and deep black for the sun is high in the sky.
In conclusion, the paintings representing different time of the day apply different techniques and the palette to depicts the light, shadow and the weather as exemplified by the three paintings under analysis.
