Voluntary and Social Work Interview
As a part of my volunteering, I talked to the staff manager of the juvenile rehab center in order to understand the most important parts of the hiring process.
Which interview types do you use in your daily work?
Each interview consists of several steps: primary screening, individual interviews, case studies, panel interviews.
Let`s talk about the preliminary work that you do before you meet candidates.
We always start by formulating job requirements and qualifications and then choose candidates whose resumes suit the best. This is a very important part of our job as we need to select people with proper knowledge of behavior juvenile problems, principles and techniques of individual and group counseling as well as first aid and emergency medical practices and procedures.
And what happens when the candidate comes to your office?
Individual interviews are conducted in the form of questions and answers. We describe job activities and conditions in details so that the interviewee has a clear understanding of the working process and potential challenges to face. Then we switch to the candidate`s experience and qualifications and propose to solve 3-4 case studies so that we can evaluate his ability to counsel, discipline, and control the actions of detainees and to effectively respond to emergency or critical situations.
Have you ever regretted to hire a bad candidate?
Fortunately, no. If the hiring specialist has any doubts, we schedule and additional panel interview and involve 2-3 interviewers. People working in our center are dedicated professionals who proved their stress resistance and a will to help youth and their families for transition back to the community.
Is it difficult for you to say “no” to an interviewee?
I try to highlight the person`s strengths and growth areas so that he stays positive and keeps searching for his way.
