Web Map Services

Web Map Service (WMS) is a standard protocol for operating the georeferenced images generated through the Internet on the basis of cartographic data from a GIS server database . This standard was developed and first announced by an international organization OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) in the year 1999. Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) began to establish standards for web mapping after Allan Doyle published the report in 1997 which described the concept of network mapping – “WWW Mapping Framework”. OGC established a working group to develop a strategy and took the initiative to create a test bench of web mapping - Web Mapping Testbed which used the pilot web mapping projects based on the ideas of Doyle and OGC workgroup. The World Street Map is a map service which provides with a highway-level data for the world and street-level data for chosen areas .

The map service is provided by the Esri Inc. which develops geographic information systems solutions. The company was founded in the 1969 and developed to one of the leaders in mapping innovation which software is used by numerous commercial companies, government, and different start-ups around the world. Esri Inc. publishes a variety of data, maps, and tools to ArcGIS online. In that way, the company is completely qualified in the map field and is worth attention. The URL for the World Street Map is the following: https://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/World_Street_Map/MapServer. The last update of the map was in December 2016. It provides with data for the world down to 1:72k and street-level data down to 1:4k which includes the United States of America, South America, Central America, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, India, Africa, and most of the Canada, Russia, and Middle East. The selected urban areas the coverage is down to 1:2k and 1:2k which includes all the man-build objects . The map allows viewing the coverage throughout the world in detail. However, the possible constraint while using the map may be the low periodicity of update and modification of the data of the map.
