Workbook Activity: Descriptive and Correlational Studies
1.First of all, the researcher systematizes all the fears of children and adolescents which exist in the 21st century. According to Adler, children fear crime, racial tension, poverty, divorce, pollution, overpopulation, world hunger, guns, shootings, gangs, dying, kidnapping, and being home alone(Burnham,2009). The second research question consists of the causes of contemporary fears which depend on the events and phenomena of the 21st century. Burnham identified three types of causes: (a) global events (e.g., trauma, disasters, war, diseases), (b)television/media exposure, and (c) societal changes(Burnham,2009).
2.Burnham has reconstructed FSSC-II on the American model, expanded terminology of fears (added 20 contemporary fears to help school counselors in the United States to deal with children’ psychological problems) and renamed the survey the FSSC-AM. The optional question was used to generate possible new fears to add to the pilot version of the revised FSSC-AM (Burnham, 2009).
3.The author emphasizes that the Australian Fear Survey Schedule is successfully used in the United States, Australia, and Great Britain for 40 years (Burnham,2009). He does not change a basis of FSSC-II and only supplements and arranges under modern society. After the survey, the researcher received responses, which consisted of old and added fears. It proves that his interrogation should be used in schools because the old poll is outdated.
4.The hypothesis of the authors states that sugar consumption may influence the proliferation of major depression. It was tested “by correlating per capita consumption of sugar with the prevalence of major depression” (Westover& Marangell, p.118).
5.Having analyzed such countries as Korea, the USA, France, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, the researchers calculated Pearson correlation 0.948 that indicates ratios between sugar consumption and the annual rate of depression (Westover & Marangell, 2002). Authors hold the opinion that it is possible to expand researches, analyzing correlation without cross-national biases and studying the relationship between diabetes mellitus and major depression (Westover& Marangell, 2002). These researches are the only method to find the causes of such correlation because an unobserved variable exists which causes such correlation.
