Aerophobia

Modern psychological science knows a large number of psychological problems and in this regard, all kinds of phobias deserve special attention because they play a negative role in human psychological stability being the cause of depression and nervous tension. Among all the phobias, aerophobia occupies a central place since it does not allow people to use the aircraft while flying in aircraft is a necessity for many of them. In general, the validity of the study of aerophobia is due to the fact that aerophobia is a multifactorial widespread problem and its treatment should take into account the individual characteristics of the patient.

Aerophobia, which is defined as the fear of flying (FOF), is a fairly common problem among people around the world. The statistics say that aerophobia or aviophobia “affects almost 25% of air travelers or 25 million individuals” (Veronese, Procaccia, Romaioli, Barola, Castiglioni, 2013, p. 20.) and is independent of their national, social, religious, or other features. Various studies also confirm that aerophobia is a common phobia but some of them note that aerophobia occurs predominantly among women that is determined by the characteristics of female psychology. As for the causes of aerophobia, they may be different. “Although it is considered that negative traumatic events play a part in the development of specific phobias, this is not necessary and there may be many patients diagnosed with phobia without having this kind of experiences” (Lapsekili & Yelboga, 2014, p. 171). In other words, in some cases aerophobia may be the result of negative psychological experience, for example, if during the flight, the airplane got into a zone of turbulence and it caused a fear of flying in some passengers. However, as the researchers argue, in other cases, aerophobia might be determined by other types of fears (Tizzard, n.d.). For this reason, the analysis of the problem might reveal the existence of other human phobias such as fear of enclosed spaces, fear of heights, or fear of death. All of this helps one to see that aerophobia is not always such an easy problem, as it may seem to be that, in turn, requires a number of other methods of investigation and selection of phobia treatments.

The question of how to treat aerophobia is quite topical for the simple reason that to date there is no single way to solve this problem. In fact, experts suggest several psychological practices that are designed to help a person to understand the reasons for his/her fear and correct attitude for flying on an airplane. “The main therapies that people seem to gravitate towards are: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy; Neuro Linguistic Programming; Hypnotherapy; Counselling and Thought Field Therapy” (Tizzard, n.d). Recent research has successfully used the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) method, which is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (Lapsekili & Yelboga, 2014).
