Affordable Care Act Survey

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly called the Affordable Care Act, is a healthcare law promoted by Barak Obama in 2010, with the purpose to regulate the healthcare industry. The Act touches many different spheres and it is related to medical staff and to simple people, who search for healthcare. Nine survey questions were developed with the purpose to understand the attitude of people to the Affordable Care Act developed by Obama in 2010. The choice the patients’ perspective was selected with the purpose to see how a new law influenced simple people, not related to healthcare profession. Apart from the fact that the Affordable Care Act allowed 90% of American population to gain health insurance, 10% still remained without it due to many reasons. The main purpose of the survey is to study personal opinion of people who have medical insurance.

Nine questions were asked to the American citizens via Facebook. The subjects of the research were randomly selected from people online. Before asking the survey questions, I introduced myself, informed about the reason of my contact and provided the respondent with the survey questions. Thus, each of the subjects saw the questions and clearly understood what he/she had to reply. I also pointed that all the findings were for academic purposes only and no name or other private information which could identify the respondents was used in the findings description. In case the respondent agreed, I asked to fill out the survey and sent it either to my email or through Facebook messages. During the research I contacted 31 people and only 20 agreed to reply my questions. Having gathered the information, the following results were obtained.

Asking the question whether the subjects have ever obtained a health plan under the Affordable Care Act, I received a positive reply from all the respondents, who agreed to take part on the survey. Therefore, 100% of the responders used the healthcare services under the insurance since 2010. These results help predict that one of the reasons of respondents to refuse to take part in the research was the fact that they either did not use the healthcare services or did not have insurance. Therefore, the survey was conducted among people who had some experience with and already created some personal opinion about ACA. Asking responders how they assessed the overall effectiveness of a new health care law, 45% of respondents (9 subjects) considered it effective, 25% (5 subjects) believed it to be quite effective, three subjects (15% of respondents) considered those extremely effective, 5% of the respondents (5 subjects) were not very satisfied and assessed their experience as somewhat effective, and only 10% (2 respondents) did not find ACA effective (Table 1, Figure 1).
