Human Resource Planning and Strategic Development

Staffing process is an important key human resource practice and it has the following eight elements:

Human resource planning – Human resource practice as one of the staffing elements has to do with an organization assessing the current situation with regards to employees, making the forecast as to whether or not the organization will need employees and also making plans to remove or add workers. Hence, the organization analysis present situation with regards to the job, come up with a job description, make provision for such jobs as well as those qualifications that will suit the jobs.

The question is what is the main focus of human resource planning? Human resource planning focus mainly on – (1) forecasting what the labor demand of an organization is, (2) making an analysis of what the current labor supply is and (3) making a balance between projected labor demand and supply to make sure that there is no shortfall or surpluses. What an organization does is to first consider the current employees, take an account of their skills and match does skill with the current and forecasted needs of the organization. If the organization realizes during its human resource planning process that the stock of staff is more than what is needed, the organization reduces pay, layoff staff or restructure its work schedule. On the other hand, the organization will have to engage in staff training, recruit additional staff when it is discovered that there is a shortfall in supply. Whichever decision the organization makes, it is important to ensure that there is a balance in the demand and supply of employees in order to meet the overall goals of the organization.

Recruitment- Recruitment which has to do with the process of generating a pool of staff to fill available positions can also be term as the process of attracting, selecting as well as appointing individuals for job positions in an organization. These job positions can be

temporary or permanent. An organization may either engage managers who are specialized in human resource practices to either carry out this process or outsource it to consultants.

Selection- The term selection is often used interchangeably with recruitment in the staffing process of human resource management. Recruitment is the process of attracting applicants while selection as to do with making a choice among the individuals pooled together as to which best fit the available positions.

Orientation- After applicants are selected for jobs, the next stage comes orientation. Orientation creates opportunity for new staff to get used to their jobs and be familiar with their expectations with regards to their present jobs as well as who they are accountable to. What they need to know to become an integral part of the organization.,

Training and development- These are another element of the staffing process. It is important because it helps new staff to learn the ropes of their jobs. This basic element is important to not just new staff but also existing staff as it helps to develop …
