I agree that Michelle Alexander’s opinion can be seen as a conspiracy theory. However, distrust of the government in the case of the War on Drugs is fully justified since in this case the government acts as a repressive, built on violence and coercion structure, which has considerable powers. Nixon has used the police force and he said that "We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings" (Baum). The War on Drugs has become one of the main justifications and directions of this activity, and now the world has recognized the futility of force to combat drug addiction, it became clear that the War on Drugs was not associated with the health of society (Bobo, Johnson). Permanent drug epidemic forecast creates an atmosphere of emergency, in which it is possible to rebuild the institutions and organizations and receive funding. Since national sovereignty is based on the monopoly of taxation and duties of citizens to pay taxes, illegal drug sales represent a fundamental threat to the state. The effectiveness of restrictive measures repeatedly questioned by different organizations.
Nixon’s "war" did not have impact on the availability of drugs in the United States. Nixon and his followers disregarded the policy of reducing harm. They ignored the marginal cost and marginal benefit of various alternative approaches. Reagan and Bush emphasized the eradication of supply, rather than demand reduction. Almost all the attempts over the past few decades were aimed at the destruction of the supply of drugs and imprisonment of drug traffickers. The drug market is not so sensitive, people will consume drugs despite their price. Accordingly effect will encourage the production of large quantities of drugs and hiring more drug dealers, which will increase the availability of drugs. However, the United States sought to engage in a new procedure for monitoring all the countries, preferably on a voluntary basis, but, if necessary, under pressure from the international community. However, the restrictive policies under the laws of the market economy has made the supply of drugs is even more lucrative business and stimulated illegal drug market.
