Psychological Contract Date
This paper will outline the main issues made by Conway and Briner (2005) in Chapter 5 about breach of the psychological contract. Also, this paper will critically evaluate the chapter answering the question whether
the issues the authors make about the psychological contract breach are convincing. Drawing on wider literature and academic journals, this paper will discuss the implications of the analysis, supported by practical examples and frame appropriate. In particular, this paper will evaluate the extent to which managers can prevent psychological contract breaches and how this might be achieved.
Main Points in Chapter 5
Conway and Briner (2005, p. 31) define psychological contract as the entire set of an employee’s beliefs regarding the ongoing exchange relationship with his or her employer. It is necessary to mention that individual beliefs are shaped by the organization and can exist in a form of promises, obligations, and expectations, held by employees. In Chapter 5 “How Does the Psychological Contract Affect Behaviour, Attitudes, and Emotion? The Importance of Psychological Contract Breach” Conway and Briner (2005) discuss issues relating to breach of the psychological contract, including the definition of breach and violation, frequency of breaches, antecedents of breaches, consequences of breaches, moderators of the effects of breach on outcomes, examination of unresolved issues, and the implications of breach. Conway and Briner (2005) make the following main points regarding breach of the psychological contract.
Definition of Breach and Violation
Breach is the most important idea in psychological contract theory. That is because, breach is the primary way of comprehending how the psychological contract affects the feeling attitudes, and behaviors of employees (Conway and Briner, 2005, p. 60). Breach is believed to have a strong affect employee attitudes and behaviours. Most psychological contract research is focused on breach, with the majority of study focused on the employees’ perspective.
Difference between breach and violation. There is a difference between psychological contract breach and psychological contract violation. According to Conway and Briner (2005, p. 63), breach of the psychological
contract is a perceived discrepancy between what has been promised and what is delivered. Violation of the psychological contact is the extreme effective or emotional reactions that may also be experienced when breaches occur. A distinction between breach and violation has advantages and disadvantages. It is beneficial to make a distinction between psychological contract breach and psychological contract violation because it prevents confusion of cause and effect. However, the disadvantage is that the meaning of breach becomes less clear because breach now refers to a wide range of perceived discrepancy (Conway and Briner, 2005, p. 63).
