Self-Esteem Reaction Paper: Self-Esteem and Adolescents
According to this article, self-esteem is considered a crucial element for success in life. Individuals are encouraged to nurture a positive self-esteem so that they can effectively fit in society. The authors of the
article define self-esteem as a person's perception or subjective evaluation of individual self-worth, self-respect, self-believe, and the level at which people look at themselves positively or negatively. Low self-esteem is a common problem among adolescents and young adults who end up having behavioral problems and poor performance in schoolwork. The article reveals that previous studies have linked low self-esteem to psychological issues like anxiety, distress, solitude, and isolation. People with low self-esteem find it hard to interact with friends in any social environment. While there are many treatment options for low self-esteem,
this article seeks to analyze the efficiency of behavioral intervention in fostering self-esteem among adolescents having the problem. Furthermore, the authors of this article seek to explore the efficiency of behavioral
intervention not only at individual level for low self-esteem but also at group level, otherwise called collective self-esteem.
The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was imperative in measuring self-respect among adolescents. With regard to measuring group self-respect, Luhtanen and Crocker's Collective Self-Esteem Scale was used. In addition,
the self-designed behavioral involvement plan was utilized to improve self-respect and group self-respect of the participants determined to have low levels of each aspect. During the research, both parents and teachers of
the participants were included to provide support to the young people with low self-esteem. A sample of 74 adolescents aged between 17 and 23 years was used after being determined to have low levels of the two aspects under evaluation.
The research team gave all participants' teachers a list of the adolescents who took part in the experiment and informed them that participants had high capability based on the aptitude and skill assessments. Educators were asked to provide individual care to the participants in the classroom environment by encouraging the subjects,
giving them maximum chances to take part in activities in class, and provide the subjects with correct and immediate feedback for their performance. Participants had a chance to express their distress, release
anxiety, and gain an understanding of how they feel. On the other hand, parents and caretakers of the participants were informed about the potential of their children so that they could give extra care so that they
can express themselves. It was important from the article for the parents to realize personal differences and avoid comparing participants with peers. Researchers had a crucial role to play in terms of meeting subjects
