Solution to Clinical Staff Shortage in Healthcare Industry – Case Study of Mayo Clinic

Abstract

This research project is aimed at finding solutions to clinical staff shortages in healthcare industry based on Mayo Clinic as the chosen organization. It is important to find short-term and long-term solutions to achieve sufficient staffing level in Mayo Clinic and thus ensure high quality of patient care, sufficient treatment capability, and well-being and job satisfaction of its employees. To address the problem of staff shortages in Mayo Clinic, primary research was conducted. For the purpose of collecting data, the interviewing method was chosen, since interviews allowed achieving greater depth in researching views and beliefs of respondents through gathering narrative data. The information was collected during semi-structured interviews until data saturation was achieved and the topic was extensively covered. To research workforce shortages in Mayo Clinic, sample consisting of 8 employees was interviewed. Each interviewee was asked 12 open-ended questions. The data collected during interviews was analyzed with application of the analytical framework.

The interviews conducted with Mayo Clinic employees allowed determining possible solutions to clinical workforce shortages and developing short-term and long-term solutions to mitigate the problem. In short-term perspective, it is proposed to encourage older employees to postpone their retirement by adopting age-friendly initiatives, utilize temporary personnel, or locum tenens, and early detect and prevent professional burnout and stress. Short-term solutions are expected to help mitigate current understaffing, promote employee retention, and ensure constant sufficient treatment capacity of the clinic. In the long-term perspective, it is necessary to diminish the existing gap between demand and supply of clinicians. For this purpose, it is recommended to popularize of healthcare occupations among youth and widely apply connected health technology.
