Essay on Ethics

Question 1

Ethics is a set of moral principles that governs a person when conducting certain sorts of activities. Formal standards and guidelines establish the framework within which the person should operate. However, the adherence to these standards is about the ethics (Ketz, 2006). Numerous rules that exist in the society are either followed or not and for sure there are also individuals who control adherence to this rules (Burns, Flam, 1987). However, there are a certain number of guiding principles that cannot be controlled on an ongoing basis that is the area of the ethics. Following moral and ethical principles the person subdues to formal or informal norms and rules accepted in the society or professional sphere (Jack, 2016). Adherence to these principles ensures the function of the individual is executed according to the social role and expectations. Ethics is one of the key elements for the professionals whose activities are based on trust and reputation (Brooks, Dunn, 2010). These professional are been bestowed with a certain level of trust from the society and they are expected to act according to the ethical principles ensuring the best results for all stakeholders.

Illegal acts violate existing formal rules, laws and regulations and have certain legal consequences predefined by previously mentioned acts. Unethical acts, on the other hands, might be done within the legal framework, but at the same time violate the ethical norms and principles (Ramakrishna, 2015). So while the laws might have flaws, which are commonly referred as loopholes, that might allow certain actions, but these actions might be not ethical. Rules and laws are not able to cover all aspects of certain issues therefore ethics establish the moral principles should be followed in case no other guidelines exist.

Question 3

Tickner (2010) claims that use of spreadsheets poses a number issues and risks. The amount of data that can be uploaded to the spreadsheet is quite limited and user working with big amounts of data is limited to only a certain scope. Besides, the import of the data from outside sources might be distorted due to formatting. Distortion of formatting might cause some formulas not working properly (Frye, 2005) and operator will hardly be able to spot it as the display possibility of the spreadsheets are limited to only a certain part of the database.

The security of the spreadsheets is quite low. Existing databases and macros can be usually accessed, changed, deleted or damaged (Abdulezer, 2006). Besides, spreadsheets contain all databases inside the file, so damage of the file will collapse the whole database. Therefore, backups are needed to ensure security, however creating multiple copies of the file poses a threat that the user will lose track of the versions and changes that will result in a mistake or loss of data.
