Moral obligations of a person are observed as the ultimate source of well-being by the founders of the Western system of values. Particularly, the importance of truth was emphasized by Immanuel Kant, who identified telling the truth as the act of good will (1997). the philosopher argued that a person should tell the truth in every case, because one never can predict all the consequences of telling lies. That’s why person would not do good by telling lies in any case, which makes telling lies to be an act of bad will. In practice, people often appear in front of a moral choice at their workplace. In spite of the responsibilities to the employer employee should always act according to the ethical norms in the society.

Employee’s Responsibility to Perform Assignments Given to Him or Her

At the workplace employees sign a contract with the employer where they undertake responsibilities to perform assignments given to them by the employer. However, as stated by Archibald, the company cannot force an employee to perform an a priory unethical action (2007). No contract has legal power to force people to act in contrary to the moral traditions in the society. Hence, an employee does not have responsibilities to tell lies to a customer due to the freedom of his conscience to refuse to act against the moral convictions (Velasquez, 2002). Moreover, healthy organizations have ethical code of conduct and make their employees act according to this set of rules. Code of conduct is often developed by the leaders of an organization and is aimed at achieving strategic goals. In the discussed case, the instruction of the supervisor to hide the truth from the clients represents misalignment with the strategic vision of the organization and seeking tactical advantages at the expense of strategic advantages. This instruction is either contradicting with the leaders’ vision of sustainable development or the organization is not sustainable. The best choice for the employee in this case is giving feedback to the supervisor and rejects to perform the assignment. Even in case of unhealthy corporate culture, the organization will have no legal justification to penalize the employee for that.

Is it Ever Right to Lie to Customers?

As suggested by Kant, lying is an act against morality since the person has not moral right to affect the consequence of event by his or her lies, because one cannot guarantee the good outcomes of lies (1997). Moreover, lying to customers is not only immoral; it is not right in concern of company’s success. It is just not smart. As stated by Velasquez, lies can only bring tactical benefits for an individual or an organization (2002). However, in the long-time perspective it can only harm an organization, damaging company’s image from the aspect of different stakeholders.
