Literacy and Numeracy in Early Childhood Development

The initiatives undertaken during early childhood development determine how well a child can learn and get used to both literal words and numeracy through an exposure to simple mathematical process. In the learning process in Abu Dhabi, there are two main goals of taking children through the bi-literate kindergarten curriculum. The first is the ‘approaches to learning’ component, through which children acquire observable skills, values and character traits that empower them and assist in the learning process. The second component is ‘academic performance’ that influences academic outcomes and benchmarking.

Thus, this paper aims at providing a synthesis of the processes through which children can easily learn both linguistically and mathematically through simple provisions such as availing print material around their environment. The goal will be to assess how a teacher can improve the learning process of children by incorporating simple learning tactics for both literal and mathematical learning through answering three questions.

Question 1

The child’s environment is critical for the success of intellectual growth in children. Having literacy and numeracy opportunities in a child’s environment eases the process of learning (Baker, 2014). Part of my attempts at ensuring children have an easy time within the writing experience, there are a few opportunities for ensuring a print-rich environment in my classroom. The most efficient method through which I can ensure a print-rich environment for preschoolers is through the inclusion of labels that are placed at strategic locations within the classroom. For example, on furniture and instruments there is a label of the name of the particular apparatus, such as a chair having a label written on it, as well as having numbers in the labelling. However, the labeling is controlled to leave out certain aspects and apparatus in the classroom free, which is possible by only labeling several apparatus in the room, as opposed to labeling all of them.

This is to ensure that children are not overwhelmed by the information which may be too visually stimulating to them. The routine board is especially important in this task since it offers an opportunity to place a wide array of words and numbers to illustrate particular information. The bulletin board has information such as names, titles, days of the week, month and year, giving the child an opportunity to interact with both literal words and numbers. Having a lot of literature in the classroom is another way through which I can ensure the child’s environment is print rich. Literatures given precedence include child-made books, picture books, children’s magazines and a flannel board with stories that the children can re-tell. Charting and graphing is very important in numeracy learning, but it is also important in helping children learn the correlation between language and putting symbols in writing.

Question 2

For the incorporation of mathematical language as well as the ways of thinking, I find that the use of the roll call is very helpful. Having children literary count out their …
