Police Violence in San Francisco Argumentation Paper
“Feds fault San Francisco police for violence
against minorities and recommend 272 reforms” James Queally and Joe Mozingo
Mentality makes the police officers arrest, shoot, and kill people of color more than whites. “However the Federal intervention in local policing has become more common in recent years, as a national debate about
the use of force against people of color has led to protests and calls for greater transparency after several
controversial shootings. “(p.4)
The statistics shows that people of other ethnic groups than whites are more likely to be considered as criminals, not only by the civilians but also by the police.
“Federal officials reviewed 548 use-of-force cases between May 2013 and May 2016, finding 37% of the
people whom city police used force against were African American, a larger percentage than for any other
ethnic group. “(p. 2)
According to the facts, presented by LA Times, stop-and-frisk actions of the police are usually directed at Africans and Latinos more than on other nations. However, the policemen’s non-objectiveness is not restricted to rude attitude and arrests – the policemen tend to hurt and kill the foreigners.
Nine of the 11 people who were killed during use-of-force incidents in that time frame were
people of color (2)
“Federal investigators also discovered that while black and Latino
drivers were more likely to be pulled over
than white drivers, they were ‘less likely to be found with contraband’.” (p.2)
Though national intervention in the actions of the police has increased in the recent years, the cases of biased attitude to people of color are not decreasing. Thus, it is possible to assume that more force should be applied to local police officers to establish a non-biased policing.
“Is America Facing a Police Crisis?” Edward P. Stringham
“Citizen confidence in the police at its lowest point
in 20 years. It has dropped among
Americans of
all ages, education levels, incomes and races”. (p.1)
“Many liberals who otherwise defend every government program and unionized job believe that the police are increasingly abusing their power.” (p.1)
“In England and Germany, where the police represent a similar
percentage of the population as in the U.S., they commit less than one-
half of 1% of all killings.” (p.3)
Many conservatives who otherwise complain about unaccountable government officials consider the
police department beyond reproach and say that any form of depolicing will make America less safe. (p.1)
Another strong counterargument:
crime has decreased
significantly in the past two decades, and many attribute that outcome
to the proactive “broken windows” policing first advocated by James
Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling in a 1982 article, [which claimed that] arresting offenders for minor crimes like loitering or drinking in
public leads to a mien of order that in turn discourages major crimes.
Citizens will be better off with, and thus prefer, police playing an
active role in the community. (p.2)
On the one hand, the active stand of the police in controlling public behavior is essential to provide citizens with a feeling of confidence and safety. In particular, the police intrudes in such small administrative breaks of rules as drinking in public places and conducts …
