Research Methodology: Sampling Procedure
A research is an analysis of materials or groups of people by using sources to create logical facts and give sensible hypothesis. Social science, used to investigate social-political human relationships, involves the use of many questionnaires and interviews. Through questionnaires, researchers are able to get a deeper understanding of the topic or subjects being examined. This essay will analyse the different types of data collection that are used sampling procedures.
Causes of sample attrition in a typical social science research
Sample attrition is whereby people who are under a case study, pull out or get lost, and this can be demonstrated by the withdrawn number of subjects or percentage (Burns & Grove, 2010). For example, if a sample is taken using a medium like a phone or practically using questionnaires or interviews, the person asked to take part in the study is called a chosen sample. The obtained sample is are people who take part in the sample. This difference is known as sample attrition. The four main causes of sample attrition include; inaccessibility, inability, carelessness and noncompliance. Inaccessibility is where the desired survey is not able to reach the desired subject. This is caused by the method of collecting data because people can change their address or phone numbers. Inability is whereby the person under study lacks the ability to respond to questions. Language barrier between the interviewer and the interviewee is also a challenge. Subjects might be careless when handling the questionnaire or might procrastinate answering their survey emails. Noncompliance is where subjects refuse to take part in a survey due to carelessness or inaccessibility when responding to surveys (Ellis, Hartley & Walsh, 2010).
What techniques would you suggest to minimize and detect subject dishonesty in a Social Science research?
The majority of the social science research has proved to have dishonest answers that are given by subjects during sample attrition. Researches, therefore, have looked for ways that will help in curbing the high levels of dishonesty in researches. One technique of minimizing dishonesty is assuring that the subject retains anonymity in the research he or she is taking part in. The questionnaires should avoid having embarrassing and judgemental questions. Making the subject feel uneasy during an interview or survey causes them to lie and this makes the information collected inaccurate. The subjects should be asked to evaluate their honesty during the entire survey, so as to avoid including dishonest studies in reports. Using the technique of asking similar questions in different questionnaires helps the researcher detect whether the subject is sincere while giving feedback. The feedback that is precise is obtained if the questionnaire is completed by the subjects or if the answers are recorded (Hartley, 2011).
