Shooting Unarmed Men
Introduction
Many cases in criminal justice may be viewed from different perspectives. In this research study, the main objective is to explore an issue in criminal justice, explore different angles or perspectives about it, compare and contrast differing views or points about the issue, and present solutions or recommendations to the problem identified. Concepts in criminal justice also be applied in the discussion. To narrow down the scope of research, the discussion will focus on the phenomenon of the shooting of unarmed men. To further narrow down the context of research, the main issues regarding the shooting unarmed men that will be explored in the paper are race and discrimination.
The succeeding discussion will be organized such that the phenomenon of shooting unarmed men in the United States will be explored as supported by real cases, the problems or issues pertaining to race will be underscored, and solutions or recommendations will be proposed to improve police operations and address the growing clamor of minority groups such as black populations in the country. Shooting Unarmed MenAs previously noted, the research and discussion will focus on the phenomenon of shooting unarmed men. Official data released by the government on crime does not include the number of unarmed civilians being shot by police officers but various media organizations released reports about these incidents. Some have even expressed concern about the lack of available data that would indicate the number of times that police officers shot unarmed individuals, with parsed data showing the race or ethnicity of those who were mortally wounded by police officers (Laughland, Swaine, & Lartey, 2015).
Lartey (2015) has put together data on police killings in the US in 2015. Based on data available and the analysis and interpretation of this data, researchers discovered that in 2015, 19 of all the people killed unarmed are blacks (Lartey, 2015). Additional data show that during the first two quarters of 2015, the number of unarmed individuals who were shot reached 119, and 31.6 percent of this population is black (Laughland, et al., 2015). Furthermore, blacks are twice as likely to be killed by police, whether armed or unarmed, more than whites (Laughland, et al., 2015). Despite this, many whites also believe that police officers discriminate based on race. Even some whites believe that police officers commit racial profiling and discriminate against black people because they believe that the latter will more likely commit crime than whites (Laughland, et al., 2015; Swaine, Laughland & Lartey, 2015). This phenomenon, which is supported by data, will be explored in the latter part of the article (De Pinto, Dutton, Dalvanto, & Backus, 2014). Some people were also interviewed about what they think police officers should do as well as improvements that must be done in relation to police procedures and approaches.
