Teaching and Education Assignments and The Case Studies Term Paper

Subject Teaching II Paper
Numerous Hong Kong primary schools apply a so-called task-based approach to studying English. This approach helps students to communicate with their teachers in school settings and to participate in logical and
useful activities; the approach also gives students a sense of accomplishment (The Curriculum Development Council, 2004). In my opinion, the aforesaid advantages show how useful the application of the task-based
approach can be and how beneficial for students’ knowledge of English and education in general it is. In addition, the approach in question can help students to advance their general knowledge and skills and to be able to use them in their everyday life. Since the task quality of the task-based approach is of primary importance for students it is necessary to discuss a specific unit of tasks, which can be applied in teaching primary students.

Five tasks can be distinguished for this purpose. Appendix 1 is associated with the outline of sample tasks, which will be presented below. The study module and the five-task unit, which contains sample tasks, are
called “interactions” and “nice to meet you”. First, students will need to prepare four tasks and then when the four tasks are successfully completed they will be obliged to apply their acquired knowledge and skills from
those four tasks to complete the final fifth task. The goal of this unit and its tasks is to help students to use their English language skills and the knowledge of verb tenses to compose a letter and then to design a trip plan. Furthermore, this five-task unit offers students a chance to cooperate with others learners and teachers in a school setting and to prepare an oral presentation in English. More details of the aforesaid task are presented further in the paper.

Task 1: Karl’s message

Students receive an e-mail message from Karl. In his message, Karl tells about the places, which he has visited, about his family members and about his interests and hobbies. After he introduces himself he wants his future classmates to tell him about themselves. Also, he wants to discover if they are going to …
