Tone in the Drawing
Even though the considered drawing was created by a student from the Repin Academy in Russia, not a professional artist it still informs about the artists’ skills to unify the image by means of tones, lines, and shades. Specifically, the drawing overcomes its own two-dimensional nature, so that the viewer recognizes how exactly the male figure is situated within the space and proximity.
First of all, the diverse tone value is used in the way to clarify the actual posture of the depicted man that holds a stick while bending his back forward. Here, the chest is depicted by using the variety of light tones while legs remain at a distance, therefore being present in the dark value. At the same time, the use of the dark tone allowed the artist to make a particular emphasis on the leg muscles while the chest and arms appear to be less outlined in terms of details. There are also other areas within the drawing that are presented in some more details due to the use of shadow patterns and cast shadow, particularly the area that unites the chin and the chest. Among other observations regarding the use of tone, the slight implication about the time of a day could be slightly guessed by tracing the shadow pattern and dark tone values from the head down to his toes.
All things considered, the reviewed drawing painted by the Repin Academy student represents the remarkable skill of using tone and shadow to unify his work, as well as to stress the particular areas. As a result, a profoundly realistic depiction is created.
