Field Trip Assignment: Anna Carpenter's Art

Anna Carpenter’s works are bright and colorful, and they have their biggest impact on the spectator thanks to their colors and the shapes that are painted rather than visual stories or images. The work “… tempting with color” is, on my opinion, the most unique and descriptive, as it has many symbols in it. First, the colors, several shades of red and blue, represent the nature of the sunrise, which is a symbol for the new beginnings. Second, the image on painting itself is structured in a spiral form, which is another symbol of the continuous development and life. This work resembles of the expressionist works as they used color and shapes to express their ideas rather than clear pictures and images (Wolf, Norbert, and Uta Grosenick, p. 48), just as Anna Carpenter. With the help of these features, it was possible for the representatives of this artistic style to reflect their ideas and vision, and Anna Carpenter has also succeeded in it.

The work from the museum also has a deep symbolic meaning thanks to its structure and colors. The picture is rather large, so the spectator can get the feeling of the closest connection with the artwork because if he or she stands in front of it, the surface of the painting reach the limits of the peripheral vision. The whole painting represents little human and animal figures who are occupied with different tasks. However, the topic of the painting is rather clear, as the figures represent the life cycle of a person, and the death that comes after life. The theme is the way life passes by each of the humans, and that each of us is mortal. The mood of the paper is also supported by its colors because the two major shades that are used is white and black, which are considered to represent life and death.
