Literature Review: What is The Impact of Exercuses on Individuals With Low Back Pain?
Introduction
Low back pain is a major medical problem in the Western nations and it results to enormous medical cost spent on treatment. Low back pain refers to the pain experienced from the sacral region or lumbar spine region or a combination of both areas. The diagnosis of the condition is difficult because the cause is not known. This topic draws a lot of attention because it is a prime cause of work absenteeism, acute and chronic disability (Wilson, Gormley & Hussey, 2011). From a personal perspective, low back pain is a major problem that requires an in-depth research because it affects a population of various ages ranging from the young to the old. It is an international challenge that has an impact on people in various professionals. The key problem is that these persons are unable to live their normal life because of the pain they are subjected to (Dagenais & Haldeman, 2012). This paper will discuss the literature review for a research that will be conducted to investigate the effect of exercises on people with low back pain.
Research question
What is the impact of exercises on individuals with low back pain? The population of the PICOT question consist of people who suffer from low back pain. The intervention comprises coordination/stabilization and strength/resistance exercise regimes for the intervention group. On the other hand, the comparison involves other interventions of treating low back pain such as cardiorespiratory exercises. The expected outcome is reduced pain in the number of patients suffering from low back pain. This will be quantified by the number of patients who experience low back pain after the intervention. The time period for the research is a period of one year. This puts into consideration that a good methodology is evaluated for six months to assess the development of acute low back pain that is less than six weeks duration. This applies for a patient that has not experienced low back pain in the last twelve months. A follow-up is done for months to check the recovery rate over time (Szpalski, 2010).
Purpose of the literature review
Most episodes in people suffering from low back pain start with minor pains and aches in the lower spine that are triggered by unusual heavy physical exercises. Sometimes the pain develops with no obvious cause. In some situations, the pain resolves without any particular intervention (Dagenais & Haldeman, 2012). Many people who present to the clinic with complaints of low back pain are treated successfully using techniques that do not involve surgery. The treatment and medical care of patients suffering from low back pain is normally labour intensive. The patient population is treated by a multi-disciplinary team that consists of advanced nurse practitioners, physical therapists, physicians as well as physician assistants (Szpalski, 2010). There are many challenges that are faced by the health professionals in providing …
