My Writing Skills
The effect of the writing depends on the writer’s understanding of style, tone, and conventions acceptable in particular genre and situation. The consideration of the audience matters much, too, as it helps the writer to understand not only what is appropriate to include in the paper, but also guides him in tone and world choice.
Another strategy that makes the writing appealing to the reader and helps the writer to accomplish his goal is the effective combination of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. I think my paper – a letter to a professor concerning the use of laptops – has best demonstrated my skills as a writer. The essay follows the personal letter genre. It starts with a polite address and the reason for writing and finishes restating the main idea. It is signed according to the letter style, too. This helps me to establish credibility with the reader, as this way I do not look like a student who simply wants to become professor’s favorite, but as a committed learner who asks the teacher not to give in to possible pleads sacrificing the learning environment. In the main body paragraphs, I have given my arguments, which are all supporting my main claim. Namely, I think laptops should not be used in the class because students do not use them effectively, as they are tempted to do other things using them, and because the ineffective use of computers distracts other students. The concluding statement restates my opinion and explains why the issue is important. I think I have used Logos by making my sentences simple and clear and by giving examples and …
