Self-Assessment and Reflection
Interprofessional Collaborator Competency Professional Development Plan
Competency area to develop:
It is necessary to increase my ability to create effective psychotherapeutic relationship with my clients. I should take into account the complexity of human communication while interacting with clients and their families. I should not be afraid to stay honest and fairly open, as that would contribute to the establishment and maintaining of clear boundaries of the therapeutic relationship (Curran et al., 2010). As far as the balance of power and influence in the relationship between therapist and client is uneven, I should be aware of my role and responsibility in the interaction with patients and strive to use the particular features of the therapeutic relationship to increase the benefit of patients.
Knowledge, skills or attitudes to develop:
I am individualist by nature, so I experience difficulties in case cooperation with colleagues is required. Still, I understand that team work abilities greatly contribute to effective team functioning. That is why I should increase my skills of creating effective therapeutic collaboration with my colleagues in order to improve the quality of care provided to my patients.
One of the important factors which define effective therapeutic collaboration is leadership skills of team members involved in therapy. Depending on the situation it may turn out that personal leadership qualities should be alternate or shared within the healthcare team. That is possible only in case I am aware about personal strengths and respect others’ opinion (Curran et al., 2010). As a result that will also increase my ability to effectively manage and resolve conflict between and with other providers, patients/clients and families. Overall, effective team members create effective healthcare teams.
Types of learning activities (e.g., formal, informal):
There are four main components of learning activities that are essential for a comprehensive training program of the kinesiologist. Among them is the analysis of the approaches which experienced kinesiologists use. Secondly, it is necessary to provide personal therapeutic work with the clients under the guidance of an experienced kinesiologist as a supervisor. The personal experience of kinesiology and personal psychotherapeutic work is also appreciated.
In addition, it is necessary to make constant efforts to enrich my knowledge and improve practical skills. At the same time it is desirable to be aware of those life challenges and stress factors, which may weaken my professional competence. I should refrain from providing professional services in the case my current psychological state may have a negative impact on the therapeutic process. Therefore, it is desirable to appeal to the personal psychotherapy.
Self-Assessment Strategy:
There are several strategies to assess how my therapeutic skills develop over the time. First of all, at the beginning of therapy, I should evaluate the client's needs and my own ability to meet them. Then I should provide the ongoing process of therapy evaluation, its progress and its utility to my patients. This process of evaluation and conceptualization should become the main factor which determines my actions as kinesiologist.
